The Washington Dining Room

Kilburnie's parlor and dining room feature faithful copies of the original elaborately plaster ceiling moldings that graced the dining room alone. Such decoration was highly unusual in the South Carolina upcountry, and local artist Jim Shore executed the exacting reproductions. Both rooms have finely carved original heart-pine mantels with gas log fireplaces, and original window surrounds and below-window paneling. The solid brass chandeliers are copies of 18th century Danish fixtures widely used in the colonial period, and still manufactured in Venice, Italy, where they were purchased.

The dining room is furnished with Pembroke tables, one an original early 19th century walnut piece, and the other three copied from the original by Bill Craig. Above the mantle hangs a late 18th century gilded convex mirror with eagle. President George Washington traveled through Lancaster County in 1791, stopping at Barr's Tavern just a mile away on the Charlotte-Lancaster Highway. The dining room features a portrait of George Washington by Jim Shore, an old print of Washington and his generals, as well as a bust-vase of the first president and other Washington memorabilia. To commemorate Washington's Lancaster visit, Jim Shore also painted the reconstructed scene at Barr's Tavern that hangs in the entry hallway of Kilburnie.

Kilburnie's parlor is elegantly appointed with 19th century paintings, prints, mirrors, and furniture-but is meant for living and relaxation. Guests are encouraged to use its small library, read local papers and the Wall Street Journal or just gather for conversation.

The main staircase of Kilburnie is dominated by a copy of a life-size portrait of President Andrew Jackson painted after his victory at the Battle of New Orleans, also executed by Jim Shore. The large scale Hudson River scene is a 1985 copy after Asher Brown Durand painted by New York City Artist Kimberly Charles
